Background

The Manta community relies heavily on rivers and seas for their livelihoods. Despite this dependence, many members of this community face significant challenges, including limited access to healthcare and low awareness of adolescent health issues. Cervical cancer, in particular, remains poorly understood, with many unaware that it is preventable through vaccination and early intervention.

China Akhter, a member of this community, was born in Char Bukhai Nagar village, located in Charmonai Union, Sadar Upazila, Barisal. China attended school only up to the second grade. Her life took a difficult turn when her father abandoned her and her five siblings, relocating elsewhere and severing all contact.

Left to fend for themselves, China’s mother struggled to raise her children under harsh circumstances, relying on fishing to support the family. Two of China’s sisters married; while two were able to maintain stable lives with their husbands, one sister faced abandonment during pregnancy, further complicating the family’s situation. Currently, China’s life remains precarious. She and her mother continue to earn their livelihood by fishing in the river, striving to keep the family afloat amid ongoing economic and social challenges.

China's Statement

I first learned from Kalam Bhai, an AVAS representative, that cervical cancer can be prevented through vaccination. Initially, I was afraid to get vaccinated because my mother warned me that it might cause health problems, such as complications after marriage or issues during pregnancy.

However, Kalam Bhai patiently explained that these concerns were misconceptions and assured us that the vaccine is safe and effective. Once I understood that vaccination would not cause any harm, my friends and I decided to get vaccinated. We realized that without the vaccine, we faced a greater risk, especially since we have limited financial means.

If we were to develop cancer, treatment would be unaffordable and inaccessible, which could be fatal. AVAS played a crucial role by providing transportation to the vaccination center and supporting us throughout the process. No other organization has shown us such care and attention. AVAS monitors our wellbeing closely, ensuring we receive the help we need. Without AVAS, we would never have known about the vaccine, nor would we have had the opportunity to protect ourselves. We are truly grateful and very happy with the support we have received.”
