Immunisation for All: Civil Society Sounds the Alarm and Mobilises for Action
Global health advocates respond to potential U.S. withdrawal from Gavi funding
1st April
Press Release
For Immediate Release
Nairobi, Kenya – Civil society are sounding the alarm: the world could be on the verge of a devastating backslide in global health, affecting millions globally. Following reports that the U.S. Government may withdraw support from Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, the Gavi CSO Constituency is calling on global leaders to step up now and ensure Gavi remains fully funded.
Gavi is one of the most effective and equitable health partnerships in the world. Over the past 25 years, it has helped vaccinate more than 1 billion children and halved child mortality in 78 lower-income countries. Withdrawing U.S. funding would put over 1 million children’s lives at risk and severely undermine global health security.
Now is the time to step up—not step away. Losing U.S. support has a direct negative impact puts millions of children at risk.
We know that Gavi’s model works—with a broad donor base, 19 countries graduated with some like India and Indonesia who are now donors, and nearly half of vaccine costs are covered by implementing countries in Gavi’s next strategic period.
But global solidarity is still vital. We can't afford to lose ground. The world is watching. Donors and country leaders must act now to protect decades of progress.
